Introduction
                            About the College
                            
                                Sanmati Government College of Science Education and Research, Jagraon was established in
                                1968. It was inaugurated by the then Home Minister, Sh. Y. B. Chavan on 18th July, 1968.
                                This is the only government college in Punjab where purely science education is imparted
                                to the meritorious rural and semi-urban youth.
                            
                            
                                The college owns its genesis to the generosity and educational vision of the Jain
                                Society, especially Matri Sewa Sangh, Jagraon and its patron venerable Shri. Vimal Muni
                                Ji, who inspired philanthropists of Jagraon to donate approximately 40 acres of land to
                                Government of Punjab for the college campus.
                            
                            The College is situated on Jagraon–Raikot Road, approximately 5 and 4 kilometres away
                                from the bus stand and the railway station respectively. The verdant and serene environs
                                of the 42 acre campus have earned the college the sobriquet ‘Mini Shanti Niketan’ and
                                provide highly conducive environment for the holistic development of the students.
                            Besides the ‘B’ grade by NAAC in cycle I and cycle II of accreditation, the college also
                                enjoys the star status in the Star College Scheme in Life Sciences (2009) by DBT,
                                Ministry of Science and Technology, Government of India.
                            
                                The salient highlights of the college infrastructure include eight classrooms (seven of
                                which are smart classrooms), 12 well equipped laboratories, a computer lab, two museums,
                                one herbarium, one main library with five departmental libraries with over 18000 books,
                                a girls’ hostel and a canteen. The teaching and learning of the college is a fine blend
                                of such innovative techniques as MIPS, PPTs, OHP, Models, Audio-Visuals aids as well as
                                the traditional ‘chalk and talk’ method.
                            
                            
                                One of the most precious jewels of the college is a sprawling botanical garden which is
                                spread in an area of over three acres and hosts more than 300 plants of over 200
                                varieties/types arranged according to Bentham and Hooker system.
                            
                            
                                The college has, since long, maintained a tradition of bagging some of the top merit
                                positions in PG and UG courses thanks to the academic and research acumen of its
                                students and the dedication and hard work of its illustrious faculty.
                            
                            
                                Different societies and clubs in the college not only give a fillip to the students’
                                faculties of creativity and innovation but also help make the education programme truly
                                holistic. They play a key role in nurturing and channelizing students’ youthful energies
                                in a fruitful and constructive manner.
                            
                            
                                With the help of Star College Scheme, RUSA and UGC, ICT facilities in the college have
                                been upgraded and updated. The college is poised to adopt the NEP 2020 norms in letter
                                and spirit from the session 2024-25.
                            
                            
                                To inculcate the aptitude for community service among the students, the college has two
                                NSS units one each for boys and girls. The students are also encouraged to participate
                                in inter college competitions and youth festival. The prizes and trophies won by them in
                                these competitions not only bear a testimony to their true potentials and talents but
                                also boost their confidence and morale.
                            
                            
                                A well maintained play ground with 8 lane 400 metre track in the campus provides
                                excellent opportunities to students to stay fit and become sports persons and athletes
                                of state and national repute. For those who have a flair for writing, research and
                                creative arts, the college regularly publishes a magazine aptly titled ‘The Scientist’.
                                This magazine also serves as the chronicle of the history and achievements of the
                                college.
                            
                            
                                Many illustrious Alumni, the pride and strength of the college, have adorned some of the
                                highest offices in country. The list includes but is not limited to such stalwarts as S.
                                Darbara Singh Guru, IAS, Dr. Manmohan Singh, IAS, Sh. Rakesh Goyal, IAS, Sh. Rakesh
                                Popli, PCS, S. Jaswinder Singh Brar, Mrs. Nisha Sarad, Former DPI (Colleges) Punjab and
                                many Illustrious Doctors, Engineers, Scientists, Entrepreneurs. The College Alumni
                                Association is quite active in helping the college in its continuous growth by all
                                possible means.
                            
                            
                                If the infrastructure of the college forms its body, the youthful and talented young
                                boys and girls on its rolls are its very soul. The illustrious faculty of the college
                                guide these students in their quest for excellence in education and real life.
